Hey everyone! I'm diving into a topic today that's been a game-changer for me – understanding and balancing macronutrients, or 'macros'. It's something that I hadn't explored much before, but it's reshaped how I approach my meals and fitness. This guide is for those of you stepping into the world of macros, looking to balance a busy lifestyle with health and nutrition.
Understanding My Unique Lifestyle

Like many of you, my days are filled with work-from-home challenges, my love for makeup artistry, and the joy of sinking into the couch for some quality TV time. So, fitting in fitness and mindful eating needed some creativity. I've learned to weave in quick workouts during my day and make my meals a blend of all the essential macros – without it feeling like a chore.
That's not to say that I look forward to the task. If it wasn't for meal prepping some days I probably wouldn't eat as healtily as I do. I like fast, easy meals, which is why we try to put those types of meals in our newsletter. I don't want to spend all day worrying about what I'm going to eat or how I'm going to eat it. I want to look in my fridge and see something prepped and ready to go after a long day.
What are Macros?
Macronutrients, or 'macros', are like the essential kit in our daily wellness routine. Just like we choose the right shade of eyeshadow or the perfect TV series for our mood, we need to balance our diet with the right mix of carbs, proteins, and fats. Carbs are our energy palette, found in grains and fruits, lighting up our day like a vibrant makeup look. Proteins are the foundation, akin to our skincare routine, essential for muscle repair and found in foods like legumes and dairy. And let’s not forget fats, the underestimated heroes, much like a cult-favorite TV show, offering us nutrient absorption and brain health from sources like avocados and nuts. Balancing these macros isn’t just about nutrition; it's about creating a meal plan that’s as diverse and enjoyable as our favorite hobbies, ensuring we stay energized and ready for whatever our day throws at us, be it a marathon work session or a creative makeup experiment.
Setting My Realistic Goals
I've discovered that vague fitness goals just don't work for me. And I know that I've talked about this before but I really feel that it can't be stressed enough. Set a realistic goal for yourself and make sure that it has an end date. I set clear targets like a 30-minute workout session five times a week. Or if I'm not feeling well, 15 -minute workouts on weekdays. This could be a mix of yoga, a quick cardio burst, or even dancing – something that keeps me active and fits into my schedule seamlessly.
Some days I really just want to listen to music and dance. So that's what I do. I put on my most energetic music and rock out through my house. My cats hate when I'm in a dancing mood, it could be because they get to dance with me but who knows. Haha, I love them so much but I'm sure for them it depends on the day. When I'm using my hula hoop they seem facinated and won't leave me alone.
On other days I'll stick with a workout video on youtube. There are so many amazing creators online that offer fitness advice and show you proper form so that you don't hurt yourself. I find that following youtube videos is relaxing for me so I like doing those more often than not. I follow a few strength trainers and yoga instructors and I find that the way they speak tends to lull me into a calm and relaxed state.
Integrating Fitness with My Passion
I've not always been a fan of making fitness fun, but what better way than blending it with my love for makeup and fantasy worlds! I sometimes theme my workouts around my favorite movie characters – it's like living in their world while getting fit. I shared last week that there are a bunch of TV based workouts available online. Try typing in "favorite show"+ "workout" on google and see what you get. I bet you'll find a workout that will make you laugh when you see it.
I remember the first time I saw a workout for Doctor Who. I was super excited and then I watched an episode, not doing the challenge yet. I almost laughed again when I realized what I'd signed myself up for. I didn't stick with that routine for long, I won't lie. When someone yells, “run” 7 or 8 times in 2 minutes you realize just how screwed you are. I don't know how the original poster for that workout did it. But dang, if they finished one of the 40-minute episodes as a workout I bet they felt amazing. I know that the endorphine rush can be great during a workout.
My Mind-Body Connection Journey
Balancing mental and physical wellness has been crucial. Yoga and meditation have become my go-to for not just physical fitness but also mental clarity. I struggle a lot with depression and anxiety. To the point where I needed something to help me find a way to slow my mind down and recenter myself. Yoga and pilates are some great ways to unwind and slow your mind down. Another exercise that is great for slowing rushing thoughts is martial arts. I don't do them often anymore but focusing on my body and the way that I'm moving is so relaxing to me. These practices help me unwind and keep stress at bay, which is essential when you're juggling multiple roles.
My Nutritional Balance Strategy

I've learned that what I eat directly affects my energy levels and mood. So, meal prepping with a focus on getting the right balance of carbs, proteins, and fats has been a lifesaver. Trust me when I say that my mood swings can be really weird when I'm hungry. On top of that I struggle with identifying emotions so when my mood switches and I 'm not sure what's going on with me it can be really frustrating. Meal prepping snacks and dinner has made a great change for me. I tend to have something that I want to munch on so I don't wander aimlessly looking for something. It ensures I'm fueling my body correctly, even on my busiest days.
Overcoming Challenges – My Personal Experience
Adapting to a fitness routine wasn't easy, with time constraints and the allure of just relaxing instead. I've had to learn to listen to my body and adjust my routines to fit my lifestyle, ensuring that staying fit doesn't feel like a burden but a part of my daily life. There are days where I don't work out like I want to, but I make sure that I'm still active throughout my day.
One way for me to fit exercise into my routine was getting a mini stepper. I got one of the mini's off amazon that had some resistance bands on it as well. perfect, i can do more than one workout at a time and i can't do compound exercises. I tend to use my stepper when I'm watching TV or Youtube. Another tool that I am able to use when I'm watching tv or listening to music is my weighted hula hoop. I recently got one that is much quieter than my first one. I'm even able to go without over the ear headphones now.
The Role of Community Support
Connecting with a community of like-minded individuals has been invaluable for me. This inspired me to create groups online where we not only share our fitness journeys and support each other through the highs and lows, but also exchange knowledge about balancing macros in our diets. Engaging with people who are knowledgeable about nutrition, especially macros, has been enlightening. I'm currently pursuing a life coaching certification, and my classes have put me in touch with amazing individuals. We discuss the best ways to balance carbs, proteins, and fats for optimal health and fitness. Learning from others' experiences and approaches to macro balance has broadened my understanding and helped me think outside the box. This communal learning experience has been a crucial part of my journey.
And that's the scoop on macros from my corner of the world! Navigating through carbs, proteins, and fats has been quite the adventure, and I'm thrilled to keep sharing this journey with you. I'd love to hear your stories too – what’s worked, what hasn’t, and all the fun in between. Drop your thoughts and tips in the comments, let's make this a shared space for growth and giggles. Here's to us, figuring out the perfect balance in our diets and lives, one macro at a time. Stay tuned, stay inspired, and let's do this together!
