Hey beauty lovers! Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time for new adventures and explorations. Whether you’re planning a beach getaway, a city escape, or a nature retreat, maintaining your beauty routine on the go can be a bit challenging. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with some travel-friendly beauty hacks to keep you looking fabulous no matter where your summer travels take you.
Multi-Purpose Products: Your Best Travel Companions

When packing for a trip, the key is to streamline your beauty routine with multi-purpose products. These versatile items save space in your travel bag and simplify your regimen. Here are some of my favorites:
BB Cream: A good BB cream combines the benefits of moisturizer, primer, sunscreen, foundation, and even concealer. It’s perfect for achieving a flawless complexion without the need for multiple products. I don't use these products often, but they have been such a game changer when I travel. I don't like taking up a lot of space with cosmetics.
Lip and Cheek Tint: A dual-purpose tint can add a pop of color to both your lips and cheeks, creating a cohesive look with minimal effort. I've found some really great lip/cheek balms in Ulta and Sephora. They are so handy and I use them for my day-to-day makeup too, not just when I travel.
All-in-One Makeup Palette: Look for a compact palette that includes eyeshadows, blush, bronzer, and highlighter. This ensures you have everything you need for various looks in one place. I like getting palettes that fold so they are small enough that if I want, I can put them in my carry-on as well. It can be so handy if you have to go straight from the airport or car to an event to have makeup on hand quickly.
Multipurpose Balm: A balm like Vaseline or a similar product can be used as a lip balm, highlighter, cuticle cream, and even to tame flyaways. I often grab a vitamin e + cocoa butter balm from my local Walmart. It is so helpful, and in the winter, it helps when my hands feel dry.
Compact Beauty Tools for Easy Packing
Bulky beauty tools can take up valuable space in your luggage. Instead, opt for compact and travel-friendly versions:
Travel-Sized Brushes: Invest in a set of travel-sized makeup brushes that come with a protective case. They’re just as effective as full-sized brushes but take up much less space. Worst case scenario, if you forget brushes, you can use your fingers. It's not necessarily the easiest to do eyeshadow, but for simple looks, your hands definitely work in a pinch.
Mini Hair Tools: Consider a mini flat iron or curling wand. These compact tools are perfect for styling on the go and fit easily into your travel bag. I tend to bring my manual hot comb when I travel. It takes up a lot less space, and as long as I have a way to heat it up, my hair tends to look good.
Reusable Cotton Rounds: Instead of packing a bunch of disposable cotton rounds, bring reusable ones. They’re eco-friendly, take up less space, and can be washed and reused throughout your trip.
Skincare Essentials for Your Travel Bag
Keeping your skin healthy while traveling is crucial. The change in environment, climate, and routine can affect your skin, so having the right skincare essentials is a must:
Hydrating Mist: A hydrating mist is a lifesaver during flights and long travel days. It refreshes your skin, adds moisture, and can be used over makeup. I have a few of these and they are sooo nice. Sometimes you don't realize how much your skin needs extra moisture until you spritz your face.
Sheet Masks: Lightweight and compact, sheet masks are perfect for giving your skin a hydration boost. They are so much fun to do. Plus they are quick and easy to use. They are especially great after a long flight.
Travel-Sized Cleanser: Opt for a gentle, travel-sized cleanser to keep your skin clean and refreshed. Look for one that removes makeup, dirt, and impurities without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Micellar makeup remover has been a wonderful makeup remover for me. But if I'm traveling and I've forgotten makeup remover, pads used to help with zits are a great alternative after washing your face with soap and water. They get out the last bits of makeup and prevent breakouts.
Moisturizer with SPF: A good moisturizer with SPF protects your skin from the sun’s harmful rays while keeping it hydrated. This is a must-have for any summer traveler.
Adjusting Your Beauty Routine for Different Climates
Different climates can have a significant impact on your skin and hair, so it’s essential to adjust your beauty routine accordingly:
Hot and Humid Climates: In hot and humid environments, opt for lightweight, oil-free products that won’t clog your pores. Use a mattifying primer to control shine and set your makeup with a long-lasting setting spray. Don’t forget to use waterproof mascara and eyeliner to avoid smudging.
Dry Climates: For dry climates, focus on hydration. Use a rich moisturizer, hydrating serum, and a nourishing lip balm. Incorporate a hydrating face mask into your routine and avoid using heavy powders that can further dry out your skin.
Cold Climates: In colder climates, protect your skin from harsh winds and low temperatures. Use a thicker moisturizer, a hydrating foundation, and a protective lip balm. Keep your hair hydrated with leave-in conditioner or hair oil to prevent dryness and breakage.
Handling Common Travel-Related Beauty Challenges
Traveling can bring its own set of beauty challenges, but with the right tips and tricks, you can tackle them like a pro:
Dry Skin from Flights: The low humidity in airplane cabins can leave your skin feeling dry and tight. Before your flight, apply a hydrating serum and a rich moisturizer. I've been working with my company for a while and when they came out with their body butter, it changed flights for me so much! During the flight, use a hydrating mist to refresh your skin, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Breakouts from Changing Environments: Changes in climate, water, and diet can cause breakouts. Keep your skincare routine consistent and pack a spot treatment to address any blemishes that pop up. Try to avoid touching your face and make sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly each night.
Frizzy Hair: Humidity and travel can lead to frizzy hair. Use a leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz serum to keep your hair smooth and manageable. A travel-sized hair oil can also be great for taming flyaways and adding shine. I try to wear protective styles when I travel (styles that aren't taken out, like box braids or tree braids) which allows me to travel with a little less worry.
Puffy Eyes: Long travel days and lack of sleep can result in puffy eyes. Pack a cooling eye gel or eye patches to reduce puffiness and brighten the under-eye area. Cold spoons or a chilled jade roller can also work wonders. If you don't want to use one of those methods, a cool cloth over your eyes can also help, especially if you also suffer from headaches or migraines during a flight.
Packing Smart: Tips for an Efficient Beauty Bag
Packing smart is essential for maintaining your beauty routine on the go. Here are some tips to help you pack efficiently:
Use Travel-Sized Containers: Transfer your favorite products into travel-sized containers to save space and comply with airline regulations. Look for a travel set that includes containers for liquids, creams, and sprays. While a lot of companies make travel size products, it can be cheaper in the long run to just transfer things over.
Organize with Pouches: Use clear, zippered pouches to organize your beauty products. This makes it easy to find what you need and keeps everything neat and tidy. Or if you're like me with a ton of Ipsy bags, you can re-use those to organize your makeup. Or put all of your main products into one bag.
Pack Multipurpose Products: As mentioned earlier, multipurpose products save space and simplify your routine. Choose items that can be used in multiple ways to reduce the number of products you need to bring.
Prioritize Essentials: Focus on packing the essentials and leave non-essential items at home. Think about what you use daily and what you can do without for a short period. For example, when I travel, I rarely bring lashes or multiple color eyeliners. I try to stick with products that I know can be used for multiple looks.
Travel-Friendly Makeup Routine
Maintaining a polished look while traveling doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple travel-friendly makeup routine:
Start with Skincare: Cleanse your skin, apply a hydrating serum, and use a moisturizer with SPF. This preps your skin and provides a smooth base for makeup.
Apply a BB Cream or Tinted Moisturizer: Even out your complexion with a lightweight BB cream or tinted moisturizer. These products provide coverage while keeping your skin hydrated.
Conceal Where Needed: Use a concealer to cover any blemishes, dark circles, or redness. Blend well for a natural look.
Add a Pop of Color: Use a lip and cheek tint for a subtle flush of color. This gives your face a fresh and cohesive look.
Define Your Eyes: Keep your eye makeup simple with waterproof mascara and a swipe of eyeliner. If you’re feeling fancy, add a touch of eyeshadow from your all-in-one palette.
Set Your Makeup: Finish with a setting spray to lock everything in place and keep your makeup looking fresh throughout the day.
Traveling is an exciting opportunity to explore new places and create lasting memories. With these travel-friendly beauty hacks, you can maintain your beauty routine and look fabulous wherever your summer adventures take you. Remember to pack smart, adjust your routine for different climates, and tackle any beauty challenges with confidence. Here’s to a summer filled with fun, exploration, and flawless beauty!
