Overcoming anxiety in a new work environment can be tricky. Going from one job that you've done for years and joining a new industry can be scary. I went from working in fast food and retail management to working remotely as a virtual assistant. Transitioning from remote work to a mechanic's role was just as daunting. The newness, combined with anxiety, created hurdles. My health conditions further intensified the struggle, making me more vulnerable. However, I found that embracing the unknown and focusing on my passion for mechanics helped me thrive in this challenging terrain. I did the same when I decided to learn about IT Support and more so I could better help my clients.

My journey involved more than workplace anxiety; it intertwined with health battles. Confronting depression and other health issues heightened the anxiety. Amidst the craziness of it all, I pressed forward, determined to find my way and make a better life for myself. It was a journey of acknowledging each condition's impact on my mental state and adopting strategies to manage them collectively.

A workplace that recognizes mental health and offers support is vital. I opened up to colleagues about my struggles, fostering empathy and understanding. I wanted to make sure that they knew that I was there and ready to pull my weight. Even though I hadn't worked on vehicles like what I am working on now, I'm willing to learn and everyone has been very understanding of the fact that I have health issues. Sharing vulnerabilities can lead to a compassionate atmosphere that aids resilience. Moreover, don't hesitate to communicate your needs to supervisors and HR departments. Accommodations and flexibility can significantly reduce stress and contribute to a more positive work experience. I'm lucky enough to work for a company that even offers mental health counseling to employees while they work to get in with a local counselor.

I've learned to prioritize my mental well-being. Amidst health conditions, I dedicate time to self-care and therapy. This daily commitment ensures my mental health remains a priority, guarding against work-induced stress. Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing and meditation, has been particularly effective in managing the overwhelming moments. I have found that when I'm frustrated with myself that taking a step away for 2 or 3 minutes is very helpful. I also make sure that after work I wind down with my loved ones.

If you are struggling with health issues, I highly suggest seeking out a medical professional. I put it off for way too long, and now I'm working extra hard to undo and minimize the damage that I did to my body and mind. Navigating health challenges alongside anxiety requires seeking medical expertise and advocacy. Don't hesitate to pursue answers and proper care for your well-being. Consult with medical professionals who understand the intricate relationship between mental health and physical conditions. Advocate for yourself, ask questions, and don't settle until you receive the care and support you deserve.

Here are some empowering tips for managing anxiety:

1. Therapy and Counseling: Speaking with a professional experienced in anxiety management provides invaluable insights and coping strategies tailored to your situation. I find this to be one of the most helpful things for myself. I have been in talk therapy for a number of years to deal with my stress and anxiety. For a while, as much as I wanted to get better, I would end up working instead and have to put off my appointment, which leads to my next tip.

2. Regular Check-ins with Medical Professionals: Regular appointments with doctors and specialists help address health concerns in a timely manner. Besides my mental health, I put off seeing my regular doctor too, and that led to quite a few problems. Now, I seriously struggle with carpal tunnel, which makes things interesting. But I love what I'm doing, and I have a wonderful doctor who listens to me when I go in with health concerns. I hate missing my appointments, and my new job is great in the sense that like working from home, when I leave work, it doesn't really affect anyone else in an "office." It is so nice that when I need to see a specialist, I can let my supervisor know and make whatever appointment they give me.

3. Mindfulness and Meditation: Engaging in mindfulness exercises or meditation can help you stay centered and reduce the impact of anxious thoughts. I try to take time to journal each day, even if it's only on some scrap paper that I'll toss later. I prefer to write in my notebook at home, but lately, I haven't had the space to really get down and really write, so I am making it work. I also have found that it's easier for me to meditate when I have a podcast going, so I've been adding mindfulness podcasts into my mix of things that I listen to as well, though I find that listening to something that I've heard before like "The Thrilling Adventure Hour" is helpful if I'm laying down at night and want to meditate in bed.

4. Breathing Techniques: Practicing deep breathing exercises can effectively calm your nervous system during moments of anxiety, offering a sense of control. I often do breathing exercises at work. I've noticed that when I get frustrated if I don't end up leaking tears, then I end up breathing a lot faster than normal so I do breathing exercises, and if that doesn't help, I take a step back and try again later.

5. Physical Activity: If you've seen my Instagram or Tiktok, you know I like to exercise. Regular exercise has been shown to alleviate anxiety symptoms. Engage in activities you enjoy, such as walking, yoga, or dancing, to release tension and boost your mood. For me, since I like to meditate while I exercise, I've been using my weighted hula hoop more while I listen to music or a podcast. I also like stretching before work because I'm now doing a lot more physical activity and I don't want to damage my muscles.

6. Support Network: Lean on friends, family, or support groups that understand your challenges. I thankfully work with one of my best friends, which is very helpful. Though when we are having disagreements, I have others that I can talk to. Sharing your experiences and receiving empathy can be incredibly cathartic. I have one friend who I will call and apologize to before we even get far into the conversation because I know it's going to be a venting conversation. Thankfully they don't happen often, and most of our calls are more fun related and relaxed.

7. Create Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. I try my best to leave my home stress separate from my work stress. It doesn't always work, but by trying to keep things separate when I go home, I'm normally not stressing about work and vice versa. Designated time for relaxation, hobbies, and self-care is also important to prevent burnout. I like when my partners and I spend time together. Some days we're playing video games or watching TV. Other times we'll have a day out where we just see where the day takes us. Either way, we all do our best to make time to mentally unwind and destress.
