Thriving From Home: Mastering Work/Life Balance and Exercise

Updated: Jan 19, 2024

Working from home has become the "norm" since the pandemic began in 2020. However, some people choose to work from home due to transportation constraints or high anxiety levels. Personally, I've grown to appreciate being home, especially with my Service Dog. However, maintaining a healthy balance between work and workouts can be challenging.

The biggest struggle I've encountered while working from home is staying healthy. Eating well alone isn't enough; exercise is crucial for overall well-being. Many suggest using home workout apps, which is a great idea. However, most of these apps require subscriptions, and I've become selective about which ones I invest in.

Before the pandemic, I discovered the app Zombies, Run! Now, I'm not a fan of post-apocalyptic or zombie themes, but this app pleasantly surprised me. It offers storylines and "supply runs" to build your base. I've purchased the subscription multiple times, as it allows me to collect supplies without limits during long workouts spanning multiple storylines.

Following the pandemic and gym closures, Zombies, Run! launched "The Home Front" on March 23, 2020, as per their blog. These at-home workouts cater to beginner and intermediate levels, requiring no equipment. They offer engaging storylines that don't spoil the main story. While I often played the missions during walks or runs, I've also tried the home workouts, and they are fantastic. Despite my initial aversion to zombies, this app is incredibly enjoyable. The log section allows you to review previous runs, whether they were storylines, supply runs, or home workouts. (Screenshots are available on my Instagram in relevance to today's post: ellab5533.)

Another activity I enjoy is dancing. I've been a dancer for years, and it's a great way to tone my stomach. Although I no longer have access to a dedicated dance area, my spacious apartment's living room serves the purpose. The only downside is dancing on carpet.

Years ago, when I lived in a different apartment complex, my ex and I had a PlayStation Move. I used to dance to songs on Everybody Dance in the living room. Now, I'm looking to get a Wii to expand my collection of similar games. They are a fantastic way to stay active and have fun at home.

Video workouts are also fantastic options. Personally, I prefer dance-centered workouts, like those led by the pros from Dancing with the Stars. The Latin Cardio Dance workout by Cheryl Burke and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, for example, is intense and invigorating. I even do these workouts in heels, as it adds an extra challenge. Also, guys: yes, there are dance shoes available for you too, with small heels that provide a barely noticeable difference. Just observe the male pros on Dancing with the Stars for proof.

For our community members, you may have seen workout posts from Marcie or myself in the forum. Following those can be beneficial, similar to following exercises from at-home apps, but with a personal touch from a friend. These workouts offer the flexibility to choose your exercises and listen to your own music, creating a gym-like experience.

There are numerous ways to work out at home, even if it's just walking around the block a couple of times. You don't need equipment either; a 5-pound bag of sugar can make for a great weight to lift! The key is actively scheduling workouts into your daily routine. If your job allows it, you might even walk on a treadmill while on the phone. (Yes, it's a thing—I've seen videos on TikTok.) Finally, remember to stretch to avoid muscle injuries. Those can set you extremely far back and force you into bed for weeks to months at a time. Stay healthy, my friends!
