Summer is here, and with it comes the irresistible allure of sunny days, beach trips, and poolside relaxation. As much as we enjoy soaking up the sun, it's crucial to remember that protecting our skin during these sunny adventures is more important than ever. Sun protection and proper skincare can make all the difference in maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion. Today, I want to share some valuable tips and product recommendations to help you enjoy your summer activities while keeping your skin safe and radiant.
The Importance of Sun Protection
First and foremost, let's talk about sun protection. The sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause significant damage to your skin, leading to premature aging, sunburn, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Protecting your skin from these harmful rays should be a top priority every time you step outside.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
Selecting the right sunscreen is the foundation of any effective sun protection routine. Here are a few of the best sunscreens that offer broad-spectrum protection and are suitable for various skin types:
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion SPF 30: This sunscreen is perfect for those with oily or combination skin. Its water gel formula is lightweight, non-greasy, and provides excellent hydration. I love water gels; they are so soothing when the weather is hot.
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46: Ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin, this sunscreen is recommended by dermatologists. It contains niacinamide, which helps calm and protect the skin while offering effective sun protection.
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40: This sunscreen is a favorite among makeup lovers. It has a clear, gel-like consistency that works well as a primer under makeup, providing a smooth, matte finish. I personally use a light sunscreen when I do my makeup in the morning.
Badger Clear Zinc Sunscreen SPF 30: For those who prefer a more natural option, this sunscreen contains zinc oxide and organic ingredients. It's water-resistant and provides excellent protection without the use of harmful chemicals.
Tips for Applying Sunscreen
Applying sunscreen correctly is just as important as choosing the right product. Here are some tips to ensure you're getting the best protection:
Apply Generously: Use about a shot glass worth of sunscreen to cover your entire body. Don't skimp, as inadequate coverage reduces effectiveness.
Reapply Often: Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, or more frequently if you're swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. I tend to go a little longer than two hours when I'm working inside for the day. But on the days when I'm outside, I tend to use sunscreen pretty often.
Don't Forget Key Areas: Pay attention to often-missed spots like the ears, back of the neck, tops of the feet, and the scalp (especially if you have thinning hair or wear your hair in a part). I haven't had a lot of sunburns in my life, but it was the worst feeling and I hated it. So, now I do my best to avoid getting a sunburn.
After-Sun Care Products

Even with the best sun protection, sometimes our skin can feel the effects of a day in the sun. After-sun care is essential to soothe and repair your skin. Here are some top after-sun care products to consider:
Aloe Vera Gel: Aloe vera is a classic remedy for sunburned skin. It provides immediate cooling and soothing relief, reducing inflammation and promoting healing. Either store-bought or fresh aloe is amazing for a burn.
La Roche-Posay Posthelios Melt-In Gel: This after-sun gel is enriched with lipids to help restore the skin's moisture barrier. It's perfect for sun-exposed skin, providing hydration and comfort. I personally haven't used this product, but it has hundreds of 5-star reviews and many of the reviews discussed how they've been using this gel for years, so I thought it would be a great fit here.
Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion: This lotion contains oatmeal, which helps to soothe and nourish irritated skin. It's a great option for daily use after sun exposure. I've used this product a few times. It has worked pretty well for me in the past, but I still tend to use aloe more.
Korres Greek Yoghurt After-Sun Cooling Gel: This gel is enriched with real Greek yogurt, which provides a cooling effect and helps to replenish moisture lost due to sun exposure. This one is one of my wish list items, I'm not going to lie. I've seen so many product reviews on TikTok, and it's made me really interested in trying it out.
Protecting Your Skin from Saltwater, Chlorine, and Sweat
Summer activities often involve exposure to saltwater, chlorine, and sweat, all of which can affect your skin. Here are some tips to protect your skin from these elements:
Saltwater
Saltwater can be drying to the skin, so it's important to take steps to prevent dehydration.
Rinse Off: After swimming in the ocean, rinse off with fresh water to remove salt and prevent it from drying out your skin. I know this is probably obvious, but as someone who is fine going from the beach to a shopping center, it can be easy to forget to rinse off right away.
Moisturize: Apply a rich moisturizer after rinsing off to lock in hydration and keep your skin soft and smooth. I love using lotion fresh out of the shower. A quick dry and some silky lotion, and I feel great and ready to continue the day.
Chlorine
Chlorine can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
Shower Before and After: Showering before entering the pool helps to hydrate your skin, reducing chlorine absorption. Rinse off immediately after swimming to remove chlorine.
Use a Barrier Cream: Applying a barrier cream or oil before swimming can help protect your skin from chlorine.
Sweat
Sweating is a natural process, but it can lead to clogged pores and breakouts if not managed properly.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help your body regulate temperature and maintain healthy skin. Not to mention, staying hydrated has a lot of benefits in other aspects of your life too.
Cleanse Regularly: Wash your face and body with a gentle cleanser after sweating to remove excess oil and impurities. In a pinch, a wet wipe can help until you can take a regular wash.
Wear Breathable Fabrics: Choose clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton to help keep your skin cool and reduce sweating. In the summer, I pull out my cotton tank tops and shorts, and on occasion, I pull out some fishnets or mesh to wear when it's super hot.
Hydration and Regular Skincare Routines
Keeping your skin hydrated and maintaining a consistent skincare routine are essential for healthy, glowing skin during the summer.
Hydration
Drink Water: Some doctors say to aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Other doctors suggest half your body weight in ounces is a good amount of water to stay hydrated.
Eat Hydrating Foods: Include water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges in your diet to boost hydration. Summer is one of the best seasons to get fruit. I love fruit salad, and it's a great healthy way to stay hydrated this time of year.
Skincare Routine
Cleanse: Use a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt, oil, and sunscreen at the end of the day.
Exfoliate: Exfoliate 1-2 times a week to remove dead skin cells and promote a brighter complexion.
Moisturize: Apply a lightweight, hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin soft and supple.
Use Antioxidants: Incorporate antioxidant-rich serums or creams into your routine to protect your skin from environmental damage.

Here are some skincare products that can help you maintain a healthy, glowing complexion during the summer:
