Staying Hydrated: Importance of Water in Your Summer Diet

As the temperatures rise, so does the need for proper hydration. Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining overall health, particularly in the summer months. Water plays a crucial role in regulating body temperature, aiding digestion, and keeping your skin looking vibrant and healthy. Proper hydration helps to improve concentration and energy levels, making it easier to enjoy all the activities summer has to offer.



Waste Reduction While Staying Hydrated

For those on the go, carrying a reusable water bottle can be a simple yet effective reminder to stay hydrated. Not only does it reduce our carbon footprint, but you can refill it when it's empty and is easier to carry around. You can generally find some decently priced ones at places like Walmart or Target; I bought both my kids ones for only five dollars, and it shows healthy drinking times down the sides.


Make it a habit to drink water regularly throughout the day to stay hydrated, and try to avoid sugary drinks and excessive caffeine, as these can contribute to dehydration. If you don't have a water bottle that helps with timing, you can always set alarms throughout the day to remind you when to drink water, or to get a refill.



Drink Plenty of Water

To maintain adequate hydration, it's important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. However, if you find plain water unappealing, there are creative ways to increase your intake.

Try infusing water with fresh fruits, herbs, or even cucumber slices for a refreshing twist. Infused water not only enhances the flavour but also provides additional vitamins and antioxidants. There are reusable tops out there, like these pictured here, that have a small cylinder on the inside that is slotted where you can put in fresh fruits to get that extra hint of flavour.




Special Bottle Tops

If you have the means to, or happen to find a good bargain on one, getting a reusable water bottle that has flavour cartridges are a great way to get some falvour into your water! I have a Cirkul and absolutely love it! You can choose to have a lot of flavour or just a little, which can make the cartridge last a bit longer. Many of the companies that sell these types of bottles not only give discounts when you buy extra in bulk, but sometimes you can find them in stores for a decent price if you only need one or two.



Hydration from Foods

Hydrating foods can also be a great addition to your diet. Foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries have high water content and can help keep you hydrated while providing essential nutrients. You can't forget about celery, either, as I have heard several people call them "water sticks". Incorporating these foods into your meals and snacks is a delicious way to stay refreshed.


While dehydrated snacks can be great for on the go, don't forget to eat them in their natural form as well, especially if you struggle with high water intake.



Dehydration Awareness

It's important to recognize the signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, and dark-colored urine. If you're spending time outdoors, especially during intense activities like hiking or beach sports, it's crucial to increase your water intake to compensate for the fluids lost through sweat. If you already have health problems that cause these symptoms naturally, be on the lookout for any abnormal presence of them as it could be signs of not being hydrated enough rather than your usual day-to-day health problems.
