In-Home Spa Day: An Affordable Sanctuary for Stressed Mothers

Updated: Apr 18, 2024

Kids are screaming. There are two pots on the stove with one threatening to boil over. The TV is too loud, and you're either wishing for a partner to walk through the door to help or said partner just walked in while ignoring the chaos that is surrounding you. Each morning brings the same chaotic routine, another opportunity for self-care slipping through your fingers. After facing the daily whirlwind of parenthood and household duties, it's easy to feel like there's no time left for yourself. But fear not! Today, we're diving into the world of DIY at-home spa days—a budget-friendly oasis amidst the chaos. And believe me, I understand the struggle firsthand. As a single parent living paycheck to paycheck, I haven't had the luxury of a professional mani-pedi in close to three years. I know the feeling of longing for a little pampering and the frustration that comes with it.

However, today we are going to talk about the best ways to give yourself a DIY at-home spa day that will cost you next to nothing! If you're on a tight budget, buying ingredients in bulk can be a great way to save money and create your own spa day at home without breaking the bank. There are also a lot of good brands names at affordable prices, if you know where to look. Let's take a look into what your next spa day could look like.

DIY Face Mask

What is a spa day without the experience of a face mask? Do you like the paper ones, or is your go-to the traditional mud mask? The best face masks are often made from natural ingredients, and what's more natural than items found in your own kitchen? Again,

if you buy in bulk then setting a few things aside to give yourself some good pampering self-care is a bit easier. Personally, my favourite main ingredient to use is avocado. If you've ever bought certain hair care products, you will actually find avocado as a very commonly found ingredient.

Avocado has a very nutrient-rich, moisturizing, and overall calming composition. It is rich in Vitamins E, C, K, and Potassium, making it very nourishing. This is one reason why it is a common ingredient in many hair care products. Avocado helps to replenish the hydration needed for healthy hair.

An even bigger plus for the avocado is the anti-inflammatory properties in it as well. This is super great for those who have sensitive skin or are prone to acne, because instead of paying for products that may or may work (because sensitive skin is really hard to find the right products for that you may not be able to afford) you have an all-natural remedy that can help with that.

Tea-Time Treats

There are multiple ways that brewing tea at home is more affordable, it just depends on which direction that you take. I say that because there are a couple different ways to do this. One is that instead of paying for pre-brewed teas, like the bottled Lipton, Pure Leaf, or Gold Peak you might want to pick up the brew bags from Lipton, Tazo, or even Celestial Seasonings. Celestial has been a staple in my house since long before I was born as my mother used to buy it; their sleepy time tea helped not only myself, but also my kids too. While some of these teas might run higher in price, they last longer than the bottles because you can brew multiple bags and make more than what comes in those premade bottles.

Pre-bagged teas are definitely a great way to go, offering convenience and a wide range of flavors. However, for those seeking even more variety and freshness, exploring loose-leaf teas can be an exciting option. If you ever get the chance to visit a Renn Faire, you may come across vendors selling unique loose-leaf and herbal teas. While these teas may initially seem a bit on the expensive side, they can provide exceptional quality and flavor. Purchasing a few jars can offer long-lasting enjoyment, especially when portioned appropriately.

So, on your spa day or during some well-deserved self-care time, consider taking a moment to brew a cup of tea and just breathe. As Emma Thompson's character wisely said in Saving Mr. Banks, "Tea is balm for the soul, don't you agree?" This simple act of sipping on a warm cup of tea can be a soothing and rejuvenating experience, providing a moment of tranquility amidst the chaos of daily life. Personally, I've found that enjoying a cup of tea is not just about the beverage itself, but also about the ritual and the sense of comfort it brings when I'm feeling overwhelmed. So, why not give tea drinking a try and see how it can help you unwind and recharge?

Bubble Bath Bliss

I like to save up some money for two things: treating myself to staycations every now and then (at least 3 times a year) for the luxury of a real bathtub, and taking advantage of the two semi-annual sales for Bath and Body Works. When you live paycheck to paycheck, having a bathtub worth relaxing in can be a rare luxury, especially considering that many homes may not have the best tubs. However, during Bath and Body Works' semi-annual sales, you can stock up on discounted bath products to enhance your bathing experience and create your own spa-like oasis at home.

These sales typically occur around December or January and again in June or July, marking Bath and Body Works' semi-annual sale event instead of a single annual sale. All the seasonal scents are superiorly discounted. Not just the seasonal ones, but if a scent is getting a new packaging look, they will heavily discount them as well.

To give you an idea of the savings, on one occasion I saved over $250 on my purchase, walking out having paid only about $30-40 in total. When making a purchase, I highly recommend signing up for their emails and texts. By paying attention to these messages, you'll receive a heads up about upcoming sales. Sadly, there isn't much warning for the semi-annual unless you know someone who works there and then you might be lucky enough to get a two-day warning, but that is never promised.

All-in-all, B&BW's semi-annual sale is a great time to stock up name brand stuff for really good pricing which can definitely help you be calm and relaxed in your bath; especially if you get lucky enough to get some of their aromatherapy line!

At Home Mani-Pedis

While they may not be professional by any means, you can definitely do your nails at home on a budget. From videos on YouTube that show you how to file and buff nails properly, to having watched a professional do it a couple times, giving yourself a mani-pedi can be very simple.

In addition to dollar stores, Walmart is a fantastic option for finding affordable mani-pedi supplies. During my last trip to Walmart to prepare for our spa night, I walked out with a bag, a file, buffer, and set of toe separators, top and base coat, and 9 bottles of polish for less than $30! Buffers, toe separators, and nail files are all priced at less than $2 each.

In nail polish, I went to the LA Colors brand as they have never steered me wrong and has always been a good quality with amazing colours! Recently, they released a "Mermaid" line of which I picked up two: a shimmery teal, and an equally shimmery but a bit lighter in colour lavender. That's not even mentioning their retro neon colours as well! All of their bottles run about $4 or less each, with basics being around $1.50 and the more specialized, like the Mermaid, running closer to $3.50.

As much as we may sometimes long for high-end, professional spa days, the simple pleasures of at-home pampering can be just as fulfilling, especially when done on a budget. So, grab some funky (but pretty!) Mermaid nail polish, mash up some avocados for a DIY face mask, and settle into a cozy corner of your home for a rejuvenating spa experience; don't forget your glass of wine, or sparkling juice for those who don't drink. Maybe even make a Mama's Night In and kick everyone out to relax with some other mothers.
