Healthy Eating During a Busy Pride Month

Happy Pride Month, all! The picture you see here actually came from a Color Run that Marcie and I did a few years ago. We got hit with colored chalk dust as we got to each checkpoint; then, at the end, we all tossed our own packet of the chalk-in all the colors of the rainbow-into the air! It was honestly the best time.


June is one of the busiest months of the year, as there are celebrations every weekend all over the place. For some, this is the biggest income boost month depending on what your business entails; you're either set up with food or Pride items to help everyone deck themselves out for all the celebrations.


As Pride Month is a time for celebration, community, and advocacy it can be challenging to maintain healthy eating habits. However, fueling your body with nutritious foods is essential to keep your energy levels up and ensure you feel your best throughout all the festivities. Here are some tips for healthy eating during Pride Month and a couple of quick and colorful snack ideas to take on the go.



Tips for Healthy Eating During Pride Month


1. Plan Ahead: With a busy schedule, planning your meals and snacks in advance can help you stay on track. Prepare a few healthy options at the beginning of the week that you can easily grab when heading out.

2. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is crucial, especially if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and try to limit sugary drinks and alcohol.

3. Balance Your Meals: Aim to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains in your meals. This balance will provide you with the nutrients and energy you need to keep up with all the activities.




Colorful and Healthy Snack Ideas


I decided to include two snack ideas that are not only quick and easy to make but are also colorful like the month we celebrate!



1. Rainbow Veggie Wraps

These vibrant wraps are not only visually appealing but also packed with nutrients. They’re easy to make and perfect for on-the-go snacking.


Ingredients:

- Whole wheat tortillas or wraps

- Hummus (any flavor you like)

- Red bell pepper, sliced

- Carrots, shredded

- Yellow bell pepper, sliced

- Spinach or lettuce leaves

- Purple cabbage, shredded


Instructions:

1. Lay out the whole wheat tortilla on a flat surface.

2. Spread a generous amount of hummus over the tortilla.

3. Arrange the sliced red bell pepper, shredded carrots, yellow bell pepper, spinach or lettuce leaves, and shredded purple cabbage in rows across the tortilla.

4. Roll the tortilla tightly, then slice into pinwheels or leave whole for an easy, portable snack.



2. Fruit and Nut Energy Bites

These energy bites are sweet, satisfying, and full of healthy ingredients. They can be made in advance and stored in the fridge for a quick grab-and-go snack.


Ingredients:

- 1 cup rolled oats

- 1/2 cup almond butter (or any nut butter of your choice)

- 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup

- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts, or cashews)

- 1/4 cup dried cranberries

- 1/4 cup mini dark chocolate chips

- 1 tsp vanilla extract

- A pinch of salt


Instructions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, almond butter, honey or maple syrup, chopped nuts, dried cranberries, mini dark chocolate chips, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.

2. Mix until all ingredients are well combined.

3. Using your hands, roll the mixture into small balls, about the size of a tablespoon.

4. Place the energy bites on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

5. Store the energy bites in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
