Fall Skincare Routine Adjustments

As soon as the weather cools down, my skin feels it instantly. The drop in temperature, the drier air, and that biting wind all remind me it’s time to switch up my skincare routine. Fall is cozy—sweaters, colorful leaves, crisp air—but it also means my skin needs some extra attention. It’s like my skin knows it’s about to face the cold and starts craving more TLC. Over the years, I’ve figured out a few key strategies to keep my skin soft, hydrated, and protected, even as the temperatures drop.

Here’s the thing: it’s not just about adding more products, but using the right ones for the season. Fall is the perfect time to tweak your routine, prepping your skin before winter comes roaring in. From personal experience, when I don’t make these changes, my skin doesn’t hesitate to show its displeasure—hello, cracking, flakiness, and even dehydration breakouts. So, if your skin’s already throwing a fit, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered!

Hydration is Key

As the temperatures drop and the air gets drier, our skin loses moisture fast. Hydration isn’t just a buzzword—it’s crucial to keeping our skin’s protective barrier intact. Without it, your skin becomes more vulnerable to cracking, inflammation, and even infections as it struggles to repair itself. Trust me, I feel it every year, and it’s a real battle to keep my skin from drying out.

For me, the first signs show up in my nose. The cold air makes it red and runny, which, to be honest, is a bit annoying. But it doesn’t stop there. My lips chap faster than I can apply balm, and my hands? Well, they start looking like I’m shedding like a lizard. Seriously, my hands get so rough and flaky that no amount of lotion can catch up unless I stay ahead of the dryness. And don’t get me started on my legs—they get dry and scaly, making it even harder to stay warm. When your skin is dry, it loses its ability to regulate temperature, which makes the cold feel even more unbearable. It’s a vicious cycle, and the only solution I’ve found is to focus on hydration right from the start.

  1. Layer Your Moisture: When the chill of fall sets in, my skincare routine shifts a bit. Instead of just slathering on a heavier moisturizer at night, I’ve started layering my moisture throughout the day. Here’s a game-changer I picked up: moisturizing while I’m still in the shower. After rinsing off, I wipe away some of the excess water with my hands—this step is key because it keeps some of that moisture without needing to dry off completely. Then, I apply lotion directly onto my damp skin. It might seem like an extra step, but trust me, it locks in moisture way better than applying it to dry skin. This trick has made a huge difference for me, and I definitely think it’s worth the effort.

  2. Body Oil for the Win: I don’t just stop at lotion though—I follow up with a body oil to seal it all in. It’s a little extra, but honestly, I’m not playing games when it comes to fighting off dry, cracked skin. Cocoa butter-based oils are my go-to because they give that deep moisture I need. Plus, there's just something about the smell of cocoa butter that feels comforting and warm in the colder months. It makes me feel like I’m prepping my skin for battle—because that’s kind of what it feels like when the cold air hits.

  3. Hydrating Cleanser: I used to love that squeaky-clean feeling from foaming cleansers, but when the humidity drops, I quickly realized they were stripping away way too much of my skin’s natural oils. Now, I use a cream-based cleanser that still gets the job done but leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated, not tight and dry. If you’re like me and your skin goes haywire in colder weather, switching to a hydrating cleanser is a total game-changer.

  4. Water Intake: Hydration doesn’t just come from the products we use externally. Drinking enough water is something I have to remind myself of daily, especially during the colder months when I’m not sweating as much or feeling thirsty. I noticed that my skin feels better when I’m consistently drinking water, no matter the season. Dehydrated skin looks dull and can even feel tight, so this is a simple but effective way to keep things glowing.

Protection Against Environmental Stressors

Fall and winter can be brutal on the skin. Cold winds, low humidity, and indoor heating can suck the moisture right out of your skin, weakening its protective barrier. The result? Redness, irritation, and increased sensitivity—especially if you’re already prone to dry skin. And don’t forget about pollution! It tends to settle more in the colder months, and those particles can contribute to oxidative stress on the skin, which speeds up aging. To keep my skin in check, I make sure to layer products that hydrate and protect against these stressors, so my skin stays healthy no matter what Mother Nature throws my way.

  1. Sunscreen is Still a Must: I know, I know—it’s fall, the sun isn’t blazing like it was in summer, so why still bother with sunscreen? But trust me, those UV rays don’t just disappear when the temperature drops. I make sure to use SPF every single day, and if I’m being honest, it’s one of the things I used to overlook when I was younger. Now that I know better, I do better. My go-to? An SPF lip balm that keeps my lips soft and protected from the cold wind while guarding against those sneaky rays. My lips used to get so chapped, and it’s one of those small changes that has made a massive difference for me.

  2. Barrier Protection: I also make a point to wear protective clothing as the weather gets colder—hoodies and long sleeves aren’t just for coziness; they serve a practical purpose. For me, this means keeping my skin protected from the elements. Dry, cold air and wind can wreak havoc on exposed skin, so when I know I’ll be outside, I layer up. It’s another line of defense in preventing moisture loss and protecting my skin from environmental stressors.

  3. Facial Oils and Serums: Now is the perfect time to incorporate richer facial oils and serums into your routine. I add a few drops of facial oil to my nighttime moisturizer to give my skin that extra boost of hydration overnight. Plus, I’ve been experimenting with antioxidant serums that help protect my skin from the environmental pollutants that seem to cling to the crisp fall air. I’ve noticed that my skin looks more radiant when I’m consistent with these, even when the temperature is dropping.

  4. Cut Back on Exfoliation: Another tip I’ve found super helpful is cutting back on exfoliation during the colder months. In the summer, my skin can handle more frequent exfoliation, but in fall and winter, it tends to get more sensitive. I still exfoliate to keep my skin smooth, but I’ve switched to gentler exfoliants and cut down to about once a week. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation, especially when your skin is already dealing with the drying effects of colder air.

Personal Adjustments This Fall

I’ve also made a few personal adjustments to my routine this fall, specifically with my hair and self-care practices. For one, I recently shaved the sides of my head, and I’m kind of loving the change. I needed something fresh, and with winter around the corner, I’m hoping I’ll be comfortable with my new, shorter fade by the time it really starts getting cold. I’m not a fan of the full 'fro look on myself, so this year I’m thinking I might go with a mohawk and add some extensions to protect my hair while keeping it warm. It’s amazing how much a hairstyle change can help you feel more in control of your look and routine.

In terms of skincare, I’ve also been paying extra attention to the areas of my skin that are prone to cracking in the cold months—like my hands, elbows, and feet. I make sure to moisturize these spots more frequently and use richer creams to help prevent the dryness that always seems to hit when I least expect it.

Prepping for Winter

All this skincare prep isn’t just about keeping my skin happy—it’s also about mentally gearing up for winter’s challenges. I’ve learned that preparing for the colder months involves more than just stocking up on lotions and potions. I’m talking about getting ahead with essentials like canned goods and other supplies, just in case the weather turns rough or prices go up (thanks, inflation!). My boyfriend’s been teaching me the art of canning, and I have to say, there’s something incredibly satisfying about preserving my own food. It’s a small win that helps me enjoy fresher, healthier meals even when the grocery store feels like it’s charging a premium.

Skincare and self-care are part of a bigger picture for me, especially during fall and winter. These colder months aren’t just about hibernating—they’re about embracing a routine that nurtures both my body and mind. Whether it’s ensuring my skincare routine is on point, planning out nutritious meals, or simply dedicating a bit more time to self-care, these steps all contribute to a smoother transition into the colder months.

So, as the leaves turn and the temperatures drop, I’m all about making sure my skin and my routine are winter-ready. The cold is unavoidable, but dry, cracked skin doesn’t have to be part of the package. With a few thoughtful adjustments and a bit of extra care, I’m looking forward to feeling great in my own skin and enjoying all the cozy days ahead. How do you prep for winter? Share your tips and tricks, or just let me know how you’re planning to embrace the season—I’d love to hear how you’re making the most of fall and winter!
