Fitness on a Budget: Affordable Strategies for a Healthier Lifestyle

Updated: Jan 19, 2024

Happy Thursday, everyone! I hope you're all staying safe and warm, especially those in the US, considering the plummeting temperatures everywhere this week! This week, let's delve into how you can maintain a fit lifestyle even if you're on a tight budget. We'll cover aspects ranging from eating habits to workout routines.

With the rising cost of living, many individuals feel restricted in their ability to pursue a healthy lifestyle. While it may pose challenges, achieving this goal is not entirely impossible. Some tips for achieving a fit lifestyle might be lesser-known or require knowing the right places to look. These considerations apply whether you're managing a single household or a family household. In my case, there are days when my household is combined, and other times it is not. I live with my children, but I also share living space with someone who is not a spouse. Consequently, we occasionally view things as a single household and at other times, we do not. This dual perspective gives me insights from both sides.

Fitness on a Budget

Let's talk about working out, especially for those without access to a gym or on a tight budget. While some are fortunate to live in communities with resident gyms, others may need to rely on external gym memberships. Did you make a pact with a friend about working out more? Check your residential gym's rules—some allow guests. Maybe explore the possibility of splitting a gym membership; many facilities provide guest cards, and sharing the monthly cost could be an option between you.

For those flying solo: affordable gyms exist, but double check the fine print! See if there's any annual fees. Consider creating a separate bank account, contributing the monthly fee plus a bit extra; this will ensure you're covered for the annual fee or any unexpected costs.

Now, if working out in public isn't your comfort zone, that's perfectly okay! There are plenty of ways to exercise at home.

Many people have access to a DVD player or similar devices. Workout DVDs are cost-effective, with various options available. Most the ones I have are done by the pros from Dancing with the Stars, but I also have one that was created around the movie Dirty Dancing. Jillian Michaels is a well-known name in the fitness world because she has made several workout programs over the years, starting back as a trainer on the tv show The Biggest Loser. Not only are these DVDs out there and very inexpensive-most of mine I got for less than $10 at Walmart-but there have also been ones to come out that you can use with a Wii, PlayStation, and even the XBox. Some people would never think that the Dance, Dance Revolution, JustDance and Everybody Dance games would be good for workout but they are! I have gotten some great cardio workouts using Everybody Dance and dancing to "Don't Hold Your Breath" from Nicole Scherzinger and "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga.

Several apps offer free at-home workout programs. Zombies, Run! (now called ZRX) provides a unique experience with its immersive storytelling and supply collection, turning your workout into a zombie apocalypse adventure. This app makes working out so much fun, with their story lines and supply collection to actually build your own base for the zombie invasion. I've used this one since long before COVID. However, when COVID hit, they came out with a spot called "The Home Front" which is specifically for at home workouts. While they offer memberships, it's not mandatory for app usage. The Walk, a companion app, uses maps to guide your outdoor walks. ZRX allows flexibility between GPS tracking, step counting, or simulated running, catering to both indoor and outdoor workouts. The app even syncs with external music apps, pausing your playlist during crucial moments.

The Nike Club is another option with customizable workouts and a nutrition section. While some exercises may require equipment, if you have access to a gym, you already have a comprehensive program at your fingertips.

Eating Healthy

Some of the best ways to eat on a budget involve meal planning and buying in bulk. If you receive our newsletter, you already have access to five different budget-friendly recipes every week, some of which are suitable for meal planning. Fun fact: we have never repeated a recipe in our newsletters. We maintain a thorough list of every recipe, double-checking each week to ensure variety.

Bulk-buy stores offer a cost-effective way to acquire a substantial amount of food. While the initial membership cost may seem high, look for programs that discount the annual fee based on certain criteria. Alternatively, consider sharing a membership with a friend or family member, facilitating efficient meal prepping.

In our household, we align our meal plans with our paydays and shop at the beginning of the week to minimize food spoilage. Household size, desired leftovers, and portion control are essential considerations. Also, avoid shopping for groceries on an empty stomach to prevent impulsive purchases of unnecessary snacks.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle on a tight budget is feasible; you just need to know the right strategies. I hope these tips prove valuable in your journey to stay healthy, regardless of your financial constraints!
